Finally back in the air. Conditions yesterday were finally favourable to fly in: Winds 090/5 BKN140 15SM vis. A nice high pressure system hung around for the day. Today’s conditions: -SHSN 1 1/2SM vis. OVC 018. And it’s supposed to continue snowing like this for the rest of the week. Here’s the radar return for my area for today:
After being out of the left seat for over a month, I was noticeably rusty. I still treat the C172 like a DA20, which is a little more agile and much lighter. This rust shows through in my landings: I’m used to having more agility and control, if you want to call it that, even throughout the flare, but in the 172, everything is much more sluggish. I tend to check the nose forward in an attempt to control any ballooning that may occur in the flare, which is understandable, but I’m still trying to find the sweet spot with that nose up attitude on landing. It’ll come in time.
So yesterday’s flight was to practice my diversions which went well. Diverted to St. Thomas CYQS from the NE and got some extra uncontrolled airport procedural practice in. Everything went fairly well and hopefully this weather will subside so I can get back in the air in sometime within the week or two.
Special bonus: I got to see the runway lights on for the first time. For anyone reading this that has more experience than me… then obviously it’s not a big deal to you, but I thought it was pretty cool. It was nice of tower to turn them on when I was short final. Kind of blinding at strength 5 if you’re not expecting it.
