1920 Flight Test Requirements

I came across this link a while ago and am just getting around to posting it. The scan is from Smith’s Falls Flying Club’s website and details the requirements of obtaining a PPL in 1920’s Canada. The test is conducted solo with the examiner watching from the ground.

Although there are way more requirements these days, at least you don’t have to shut the engine off at 5,000′ and glide to a spot landing within 300′ of your mark! Enjoy this tidbit of Canadian aviation history…

Aviation Tidbit #1: The Spirit of St. Louis

Charles Lindbergh

On May 20, 1927, Charles Lindbergh solo’d his way from New York to Paris, as many of you know. What you might not have known, is that by the time he reached the Irish coast, over a day later, and having already been awake for over 45 hours straight (he didn’t sleep the night before), he was only 3 miles off his planned course. Now that’s dead reckoning. He only had a compass, a gallon of water, and five sandwiches. We GPS folks have it easy.
